Links Tab
This is where you can change the link checking options that affect CSE HTML Validator Professional's Batch Wizard. Link checking with the Batch Wizard is new to CSE HTML Validator Professional v4.05 and above. CSE HTML Validator Lite does not include the Batch Wizard.
Text Edit Options
- Default target extensions to follow - This is a comma separated list of extensions that is used as the default extensions for links to follow when following the links of a target. Once a target is added and follow links is enabled for that target, you can change the extensions to follow for that specific target. The default extensions to follow for a new target will be the extensions that are in this edit box.
Link Reporting Options
- Enable link checking - Check this box to check the links of documents that are validated with the Batch Wizard. You must be using a compatible configuration file, such as the one included with HTML Validator or no links will be extracted and checked. Enabling this option may considerably increase the time needed to validate documents because link checking may be time consuming, especially when a link times out. Therefore, the Batch Wizard may appear to stop while checking links. However, HTML Validator uses several methods to increase the speed of the link checking, such as checking multiple links at a time and using a link cache. HTML Validator does not support link checking of all types of links. Currently, HTML Validator will check file, directory, and HTTP links. HTTPS and FTP links are currently not supported.
NOTE: CSE HTML Validator makes "HEAD" requests to web servers in order to verify links. Some valid links may return error codes because the web server may behave differently or incorrectly for "HEAD" requests than for more common "GET" and "POST" requests. HTML Validator simply reports the error and status code that is returned by the web server. Therefore, if HTML Validator reports an error for a valid link, then it is probably because the web server is reporting the error and not because of a bug in HTML Validator.
Note that you cannot stop the Batch Wizard during a link check. If you try to stop processing during a link check, then you will have to wait for the Batch Wizard to finish the link check before stopping. This option is not enabled by default.
- Always generate a link report - Check this box to always generate a link report, including for documents without any errors or warnings even when you have asked not to generate reports for documents without any errors or warnings (in this case, a link report will be generated but not a message report). This option is not enabled by default.
- Include links that have failed the link check in the link report - Check this box to include a list of bad (failed) links in the link report. This option is enabled by default.
- Include links that could not be checked in the link report - Check this box to include a list of links that could not be checked in the link report. A link that cannot be checked is one that HTML Validator does not provide support for checking. This option is not enabled by default.
- Include links that have passed the link check in the link report - Check this box to include a list of good links in the link report. A good link is one that HTML Validator knows how to check and that has been successfully checked. This option is not enabled by default.
- Link each link in the link report to the link it represents - Check this box to "link the links" in the link report. This allows you to click on them. Clicking on the links will open the link in a new window. You can disable this option to reduce the size of the report and increase the speed at which the report is displayed in your browser. This option is enabled by default.
